some planets have pretty high gravity too, as isnt escape Velocity the speed needed to get off the surface or is it the speed to leave orbit. because one certainly doesnt need 12km/sec to lift off of a planet unless it is massive or really dense.

well that is just the plain funky EVE physics, keep in mind in space we could logically hit our afterburners then cut all thrust, go dark and be off sensors but still be going at say 500m/s

i think flying through planets could either be explained that we are not in real space when in a warp tunnel or that it simply worked for game mechanics

I've been bored enough to slowboat through a planet before, and I'm sure many others have. When the planet fills the screen it gets pretty intimidating, giving you the impression that you are in fact about to become a smear on the landscape, but then you pass through and the planet graphic disappears :( Untill you reach the very centre of the planet, which will then decide it doesn't like you and kick you out at about 200km/s for your trouble.
Would be better if you got bumped off the planet at say 20km (your nav computer initiates emergency course correction to prevent collision with a habitable planet or similar RP reason) instead of when you've technically drilled your spaceship about 20,000km through the crust and mantle into the core. Just make then large collidable objects.
ships hitting planets, that would make for an interesting element to an EVE story. where as a Defense of something deep in a system all barren or volcanic planets someone erects ultra powerful tractor beams and unauthorized ships are pulled into the planet to crash. come to think of it that would be a cool defense system. lifeless worlds used to crash enemy ships with tractor beams that are themselves highly shielded and powered off the planet's core heat(and now i am mixing bond villain craziness with EVE).

my guess is someone entered numbers for planet types and making the temps correct was on a to do list. but trust me id rather have a missile spewing drake then correct planet temps.
